Legal Dupes vs No Dupes
To examine the impact of contesting with legal dupes vs no dupes at all, Bill (N6ZFO) looked at the results from a special two-week dupe test.
METHOD
1. Collected a group of twenty-two scores that met all of the following
criteria:
a. Both weeks of dupe test.
b. In regular ladder 2 of the 3 wks prior to no-dupe test ( 20
stns in 3 wks, 3 in 2 wks)
c. The difference between No Dupe Wk 1 and 2 was less than x2
(nearly all stns had much less score difference.
2. Computed the following numbers:
a. The average score for the no-dupes week
b. The av score for the previous 3 wks of NSL.
c. The percent difference between the no-dupes vs. dupes. So a
positive number means higher score when dupes were not allowed on same
band.
3. Rank-ordered the percents based on their absolute values, low to high, and then
made a plot using the signed error differences. So stations that benefited from not
working dupes are above the axis, and those who did worse are below.
Results:
The graph shows two diverging lines above and below
the axis, symmetrical and with similar values. Eleven stations benefited from
no-dupes, nine had lower scores and one remained the same. Seventeen of the
scores had less than 16 percent difference, 11 differed by 10 percent or less.
Here are the data used in the plot:
